This project was the result of my desire to capture the beauty and explore the architecture of French châteaux after a recent trip to a good friend's wedding in the Loire Valley, during which I got a chance to visit a handful of stunning châteaux. And what better way than a photo-heavy coffee-table book?

Direction & Design

My goal was to create an enticing book that explores the history and design of French châteaux with a royal history; allowing enough space for detailed, informative text while also showcasing lots of images of both architectural details and the châteaux as a whole in a balanced manner.

Inspired by the architectural details from the châteaux, along with French toile patterns often used as wallpaper or fabric treatments in châteaux, I created a custom floral pattern to serve as the backdrop of the book’s front and back covers. Similar toile patterns are used in the inside spreads as backdrops to continue the theme throughout the book. To match the royal nature of the contents, elegant serif typefaces were selected. A text hierarchy was created that guides the reader through the text, with photo captions smaller than the body text and italicized. Text is juxtaposed next to striking images to create a visually appealing read.

Design System

Given how many chateaus the book contains, I created a system that all the chateaus would follow throughout the book. Each chateau will begin with an individual chateau title page, which features a full-bleed image of the chateau on the verso and the chateau name and which region it’s located in on the recto. Following the title page are the introduction pages, which feature the history of the chateau on the verso, which is atop a periwinkle background. The history continues as needed until you hit the “Royal Residents” spotlight page, which features portrait images of those royals and a brief intro of their history and their ties to that specific chateau. Once the history is covered, a varied number of pages (depending on the chateau) will showcase large images of the chateau and its interesting features. Finally, to end each chateau on a sage green background, there will be a two-page spread showcasing the gardens.
